Catalonian Fantasy
On a recent trip to Barcelona, Spain I came back inspired by the iron gates, grilles, fences, doors and railings made by Catalan metal workers over the centuries.
Those metal shapes and forms I saw in Spain all felt so familiar to me having lived in Providence for more than 45 years, living in and walking through the East Side rich in it’s own way with hand forged metal work.
The form of the cone, a complex shape that is both a triangle and a circle, intrigues me. My idea behind this sculpture was to create a transparent, lacy, calligraphic counter point to the solid, opaque, massive elements around it like, earth, grass, trees, rocks, and buildings.
